From as early as nineteenth-century African American opera star Thomas Bowers??The Colored Mario??all the way to hip-hop entrepreneur Puff Daddy dubbing himself ?the Black Sinatra,? the affinity between black and Italian cultures runs deep and wide. Once you start looking, you?ll find these connections everywhere. Sinatra croons bel canto over the limousine swing of the Count Basie band. Snoop Dogg deftly tosses off the line ?I?m Lucky Luciano ?bout to sing soprano.? Like the Brooklyn pizzeria and candy store in Spike Lee?s Do the Right Thing and Jungle Fever, or the basketball sidelines where Italian American coaches Rick Pitino and John Calipari mix it up with their African American players, black/Italian connections are a thing to behold?and to investigate. In Flavor and Soul, John Gennari spotlights this affinity, calling it ?the edge??now smooth, sometimes serrated?between Italian American and African American culture. He argues that the edge is a space of mutual emulation and suspicion, a joyous cultural meeting sometimes darkened by violent collision. Through studies of music and sound, film and media, sports and foodways, Gennari shows how an Afro-Italian sensibility has nourished and vitalized American culture writ large, even as Italian Americans and African Americans have fought each other for urban space, recognition of overlapping histories of suffering and exclusion, and political and personal rispetto. Thus, Flavor and Soul is a cultural contact zone?a piazza where people express deep feelings of joy and pleasure, wariness and distrust, amity and enmity. And it is only at such cultural edges, Gennari argues, that America can come to truly understand its racial and ethnic dynamics. 606 $aItalian American$xEthnic identity 606 $aItalian Americans$xSocial life and customs 606 $aAfrican Americans$xRelations with Italian Americans 606 $aPopular culture$zUnited States 607 $aUnited States$xEthnic relations 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aAfrican Americans. 610 $aItalian Americans. 610 $aculture. 610 $afood. 610 $amedia. 610 $amusic. 610 $asport. 615 0$aItalian American$xEthnic identity. 615 0$aItalian Americans$xSocial life and customs. 615 0$aAfrican Americans$xRelations with Italian Americans. 615 0$aPopular culture 676 $a305.85/1073 700 $aGennari$b John$0769767 801 0$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910164955103321 996 $aFlavor and soul$91569700 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05015nam 2200625 450 001 9910787188703321 005 20230803204731.0 010 $a3-03826-615-9 035 $a(CKB)3710000000230699 035 $a(EBL)1910928 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001378459 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11907631 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001378459 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11339932 035 $a(PQKB)11550122 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1910928 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1910928 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10930311 035 $a(OCoLC)893685584 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000230699 100 $a20140924h20142014 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aApplied information and digital image technologies, control and power engineering $eselected, peer reviewed papers from the International Conference on Energy Efficient Technologies for Sustainability (ICEETS '14 ), April 7-9, 2014, Tamil Nadu, India /$fedited by R. Die kurdischen Familien bringen Staats- und Minderheitensprachen und deren Varietäten mit, zudem geschriebene und ungeschriebene Sprachen sowie Sprachen, die nur rezeptiv gebraucht, also gelesen, werden. Die Analyse umfasst die literalen Praktiken der Herkunftsgesellschaft und deren Integration in die Aufnahmegesellschaft. 330 $aThis book examines the linguistic socialization of Kurdish immigrant families in Austria.
