Far from being close-ended and self-contained, the novels and plays in which these characters first appeared were treated by many as merely a starting point, a collective reference perpetually inviting augmentation through an astonishing wealth of unauthorized sequels. Characters became an inexhaustible form of common property, despite their patent authorship. Readers endowed them with value, knowing all the while that others were doing the same and so were collectively forging a new mode of virtual community.By tracing these practices, David A. Brewer shows how the literary canon emerged as much "from below" as out of any of the institutions that have been credited with their invention. Indeed, he reveals the astonishing degree to which authors had to cajole readers into granting them authority over their own creations, authority that seems self-evident to a modern audience. In its innovative methodology and its unprecedented attention to the productive interplay between the audience, the book as a material artifact, and the text as an immaterial entity, The Afterlife of Character, 1726-1825 offers a compelling new approach to eighteenth-century studies, the history of the book, and the very idea of character itself. 410 0$aMaterial texts. 606 $aEnglish literature$y18th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aCharacters and characteristics in literature 606 $aIntellectual property$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aIntellectual property$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aAuthors and readers$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aAuthors and readers$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aEnglish literature$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aInfluence (Literary, artistic, etc.)$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aInfluence (Literary, artistic, etc.)$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aSequels (Literature) 610 $aCultural Studies. 610 $aLiterature. 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aCharacters and characteristics in literature. 615 0$aIntellectual property$xHistory 615 0$aIntellectual property$xHistory 615 0$aAuthors and readers$xHistory 615 0$aAuthors and readers$xHistory 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aInfluence (Literary, artistic, etc.)$xHistory 615 0$aInfluence (Literary, artistic, etc.)$xHistory 615 0$aSequels (Literature) 676 $a820.9/27/09033 700 $aBrewer$b David A$g(David Allen),$f1969-$01610332 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910820526603321 996 $aThe afterlife of character, 1726-1825$93938058 997 $aUNINA
