In Bringing the Gods to Mind, Laurie Patton takes a new look at mantra as "performed poetry" and in five case studies draws a portrait of early Indian sacrifice that moves beyond the well-worn categories of "magic" and "magico-religious" thought in Vedic sacrifice. Treating Vedic mantra as a sophisticated form of artistic composition, she develops the idea of metonymy, or associational thought, as a major motivator for the use of mantra in sacrificial performance. Filling a long-standing gap in our understanding, her book provides a history of the Indian interpretive imagination and a study of the mental creativity and hermeneutic sophistication of Vedic religion. 606 $aHinduism$xRituals 606 $aMantras 610 $aatharva veda. 610 $abandhu. 610 $abrahmana. 610 $abrahmin. 610 $aceremony. 610 $achanting. 610 $adeity. 610 $adevata. 610 $aeastern religion. 610 $afood studies. 610 $agrhya. 610 $ahinduism. 610 $ahymns. 610 $aindia. 610 $aindian sacrifice. 610 $aindic religion. 610 $amagic. 610 $amantra. 610 $ameditation. 610 $ametonymy. 610 $amindfulness. 610 $aperformance theory. 610 $aperformed poetry. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious belief. 610 $areligious history. 610 $areligious poetry. 610 $areligious practice. 610 $arite. 610 $aritual. 610 $asacrifice. 610 $asoma. 610 $asouth asia. 610 $aspirituality. 610 $asrauta literature. 610 $asupernatural. 610 $atradition. 610 $aupanisads. 610 $avedic ritual. 610 $avedic. 610 $avidhana. 610 $aviniyoga. 610 $avisualization. 615 0$aHinduism$xRituals. 615 0$aMantras. 676 $a294.5/38 700 $aPatton$b Laurie L.$f1961-$01636625 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910820278103321 996 $aBringing the gods to mind$93977982 997 $aUNINA
