Symptoms of Modernity traces this development in the context of Central European history. Jews and homosexuals are signposts of an exclusionary process of nation-building. Cast in their modern roles in the late nineteenth century, they functioned as Others, allowing a national community to imagine itself as a site of ethnic and sexual purity. In Matti Bunzl's incisive historical and cultural analysis, the Holocaust appears as the catastrophic culmination of this violent project, an attempt to eradicate modernity's abject by-products from the body politic. As Symptoms of Modernity shows, though World War II brought an end to the genocidal persecution, the nation's exclusionary logic persisted, accounting for the ongoing marginalization of Jews and homosexuals. Not until the 1970's did individual Jews and queers begin to challenge the hegemonic subordination-a resistance that, by the 1990's, was joined by the state's attempts to ensure and affirm the continued presence of Jews and queers. Symptoms of Modernity gives an account of this radical cultural reversal, linking it to geopolitical transformations and to the supersession of the European nation-state by a postmodern polity. 606 $aJews$zAustria$zVienna$xSocial conditions$y20th century 606 $aGays$zAustria$zVienna$xSocial conditions$y20th century 606 $aNationalism$xSocial aspects$zAustria 607 $aVienna (Austria)$xEthnic relations 607 $aVienna (Austria)$xSocial life and customs$y20th century 607 $aAustria$xHistory$y1955- 607 $aAustria$xSocial policy 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aJews$xSocial conditions 615 0$aGays$xSocial conditions 615 0$aNationalism$xSocial aspects 676 $a305.892/4043613/09049 700 $aBunzl$b Matti$f1971-$053524 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456385903321 996 $aSymptoms of modernity$92473018 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05425nam 2200625 450 001 9910819846803321 005 20230124190910.0 010 $a3-03813-822-3 035 $a(CKB)2670000000348186 035 $a(EBL)1872852 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001141385 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11623927 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001141385 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11090396 035 $a(PQKB)11758575 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1872852 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1872852 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10828187 035 $a(OCoLC)812542748 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000348186 100 $a20130610h20122012 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aSport, arts materials and management science $eselected, peer reviewed papers from the International Conference on Sport, Arts Materials and Management Science (SAMMS 2012), May 4-6, 2012, Chongqing, China /$fedited by Wenjiang Du 210 1$aDurnten-Zurich :$cTrans Tech,$d[2012] 210 4$dİ2012 215 $a1 online resource (299 p.) 225 1 $aAdvanced materials research,$x1022-6680 ;$vvolume 507 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a3-03785-407-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and indexes. 327 $aSport, Arts Materials and Management Science; Preface, Committees and Reviewers; Table of Contents; Chapter 1: Technology of Materials and Chemistry; The Pollution Caused by Building Materials and the Strategy to Control it; Application of Composite Materials in Ball Sports Equipments; Based on the Main Factor Mathematical Method to Study on the Structure and Performance of Automobile Engine Oil Filter Materials; Based on a Linear Regression Method to Study the Fiber Diameter of Car Engine Oil Filter Materials 327 $aThe Effect of Impurity Atoms on the Structural and Electronic Properties of Au3 ClustersResearches on Fractal Features of Graphite Porous Materials; Research of Simultaneous Measurement of Temperature and Strain of Fiber Optic Cable Material; On the Characteristics of Acoustic Wire with Different Materials in the Music Playback; Effects of Bias on the Bonding Structure and Mechanical Property of a-C:H Films Deposited by MFPUMST; Magnetoresistance of Nanostructured Sr2FeMoO6/CeO2 Composites; Synthesis and Characterization of Ni/CNTs Electrodes and their Supercapacitors Performance 327 $aPhotonic Bandgap Properties of Photonic Crystal Fibers with the Triangular Nonair-Silica StructuresSynthesis and Characterization of Novel Biological Active Material with Aroyl Urea; Adsorption of Hydrogen Molecule on the Intrinsic and Al-Doped Graphene: A First Principle Study; Reducibility of La2Mo2-XGaxO9-?
