In this fascinating study of the transnational ex-gay movement, Tanya Erzen focuses on the everyday lives of men and women at New Hope Ministry, a residential ex-gay program, over the course of several years. Straight to Jesus traces the stories of people who have renounced long-term relationships and moved from other countries out of a conviction that the conservative Christian beliefs of their upbringing and their own same-sex desires are irreconcilable. Rather than definitively changing from homosexual to heterosexual, the participants experience a conversion that is both sexual and religious as born-again evangelical Christians. At New Hope, they maintain a personal relationship with Jesus and build new forms of kinship and belonging. By becoming what they call "new creations," these men and women testify to religious transformation rather than changes in sexual desire or behavior. Straight to Jesus exposes how the Christian Right attempts to repudiate gay identity and political rights by using the ex-gay movement as evidence that "change is possible." Instead, Erzen reveals, the realities of the lives she examines actually undermine this anti-gay strategy. 606 $aChurch work with gay people$zCalifornia$zSan Rafael$vCase studies 606 $aEx-gay movement$zCalifornia$zSan Rafael$vCase studies 610 $aborn again christians. 610 $achristian conversions. 610 $achristian lives. 610 $achristian ministries. 610 $achristian right. 610 $achristianity. 610 $aconservative christianity. 610 $aevangelical christians. 610 $aex gay ministries. 610 $aex gay movement. 610 $agay identity. 610 $agay men. 610 $aheterosexuality. 610 $ahomosexuality. 610 $ahuman rights. 610 $ajesus. 610 $alesbians. 610 $algbtq. 610 $amen and women. 610 $anew hope ministry. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $apolitical rights. 610 $areligious transformation. 610 $aromantic relationships. 610 $asame sex desire. 610 $asexual conversions. 610 $asexual desire. 610 $asexuality. 610 $asocial history. 610 $atransnationalism. 615 0$aChurch work with gay people 615 0$aEx-gay movement 676 $a306.6/6183576 700 $aErzen$b Tanya$01137039 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910819726703321 996 $aStraight to Jesus$93930195 997 $aUNINA
