Bjork challenges the traditional view with an examination of the major structural feature that all the poems share: direct discourse. Syntactical and rhetorical analyses of the five poems reveal a consistent use of spech in creating stylistic norms or ideals - stylistic icons - in spiritually perfect figures. In all the poems the speech of the saints in formal, rhetorical, and balanced, the stylistic analogue both of their immutable fith and of the Christ-saint figural connection. The speech of all other characters is measured against this standard; their ability or inability to meet the saintly ideal in language reflects their level of spiritual awareness. The consistency with which these patterns appear sheds new light on the conventions of Old English poetic hagiography. 410 0$aMcMaster Old English studies and texts ;$v4. 606 $aChristian poetry, English (Old)$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChristian saints$xLegends$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChristian hagiography$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aChristian saints in literature 606 $aDiscourse analysis, Literary 607 $aEnglisch$2swd 607 $aAltenglisch$2swd 607 $aGrossbritannien$2gnd 608 $aCritiques litteraires. 608 $aLiterary criticism. 608 $aCriticism, interpretation, etc. 608 $aLiterary criticism. 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aChristian poetry, English (Old)$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChristian saints$xLegends$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChristian hagiography$xHistory 615 0$aChristian saints in literature. 615 0$aDiscourse analysis, Literary. 676 $a829.1 700 $aBjork$b Robert E.$f1949-$01676068 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910819494803321 996 $aThe Old English verse saints' lives$94041998 997 $aUNINA
