His 1927 Show Boat with Oscar Hammerstein II helped to set a new standard for musical theater. This book is the first to provide a critical overview of Kern's musical accomplishments throughout his career. Stephen Banfield ranges from Broadway, to Hollywood, and to London's West End, drawing on unpublished manuscripts and scores to assess the composer's extraordinary oeuvre. Kern's life, personality, and working methods are given due attention, as is the development of his work from the early musical comedies through the collaborations with Hammerstein and P. G. Wodehouse up to the later film scores. Banfield focuses especially on the musical and lyrical structures of Kern's compositions, illuminating beloved works and shedding light on compositions often overlooked. 410 0$aYale Broadway masters. 606 $aComposers$zUnited States$vBiography 615 0$aComposers 676 $a782.1/4092 676 $aB 700 $aBanfield$b Stephen$f1951-$01476931 701 $aBlock$b Geoffrey Holden$f1948-$0936001 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910778282603321 996 $aJerome Kern$93691730 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02755nam 2200613 450 001 9910818935403321 005 20230803203501.0 010 $a0-299-29813-2 035 $a(CKB)3710000000167674 035 $a(EBL)3445413 035 $a(OCoLC)883373249 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001263821 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11729366 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001263821 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11233341 035 $a(PQKB)11642488 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3445413 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse37724 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3445413 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10889400 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL625723 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000167674 100 $a20140716h20142014 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|||||||nn|n 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe first epoch $ethe eighteenth century and the Russian cultural imagination /$fLuba Golburt 210 1$aMadison, Wisconsin :$cThe University of Wisconsin Press,$d2014. 210 4$d©2014 215 $a1 online resource (403 p.) 225 1 $aPublications of the Wisconsin Center for Pushkin Studies 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-299-29814-0 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $a""Contents""; ""List of Illustrations""; ""Acknowledgments""; ""Introduction: The Eighteenth Century as a Vanishing Point""; ""Part I: Derzhavin's Moment""; ""Prologue""; ""1.
