Yet beneath this general label, many fundamental differences existed. Republicanism could stand for anti-monarchism, but it could also be a moral doctrine emphasizing the importance of the exercise of virtue, or refer to a certain way of life. During the revolutionary years of the late eighteenth century, it came to mean the permanent and active sovereignty of the people. This book explores the many varieties of eighteenth-century Dutch republicanism from a number of different methodological perspectives. It thereby significantly contributes to our understanding of a crucial period in the development of Dutch political thought. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history ;$vv. 155. 606 $aRepublicanism$zNetherlands$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aConstitutional history$zNetherlands 607 $aNetherlands$xPolitics and government$y1648-1795 607 $aNetherlands$xPolitics and government$y1795-1815 615 0$aRepublicanism$xHistory 615 0$aConstitutional history 676 $a320.449209/033 700 $aVelema$b Wyger$01605945 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910818638403321 996 $aRepublicans$94069086 997 $aUNINA
