There they feed in shoreline marshes and estuaries along some of the most productive and pristine coasts anywhere. With so much available food they are able to reproduce almost explosively; and as winter approaches, they retreat south along with their offspring, to return to the Arctic the following spring. This remarkable pattern of movement and activity has been the object of intensive study by an international team of ornithologists who have spent a decade counting, surveying, and observing these shorebirds. In this important synthetic work, they address multiple questions about these migratory bird populations. How many birds occupy Arctic ecosystems each summer? How long do visiting shorebirds linger before heading south? How fecund are these birds? Where exactly do they migrate and where exactly do they return? Are their populations growing or shrinking? The results of this study are crucial for better understanding how environmental policies will influence Arctic habitats as well as the far-ranging winter habitats used by migratory shorebirds. 410 0$aStudies in avian biology ;$vno. 44. 606 $aShore birds$zCanada, Northern 606 $aShore birds$zAlaska 606 $aBird surveys$zCanada, Northern 606 $aBird surveys$zAlaska 610 $aarctic ecosystems. 610 $aarctic habitats. 610 $abird population. 610 $abird science. 610 $abird watchers. 610 $abirds in the cold. 610 $abirds in the winter. 610 $abooks about birds. 610 $abooks for animal lovers. 610 $aconservation of birds. 610 $adistractions for kids. 610 $aeducational books. 610 $aenvironment books. 610 $aenvironmental ecosystem. 610 $ahead south for the winter. 610 $ahome school science books. 610 $ainteresting books. 610 $aleisure reads. 610 $alife sciences. 610 $anature lovers. 610 $aornithology. 610 $apassion books. 610 $aplanet earth lovers. 610 $ashorebirds. 610 $avacation books. 610 $awildlife. 610 $awinter habitats. 610 $azoology. 615 0$aShore birds 615 0$aShore birds 615 0$aBird surveys 615 0$aBird surveys 676 $a598.3/309719 701 $aBart$b Jonathan$0531545 701 $aJohnston$b Victoria Helen$f1962-$01677404 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910818623303321 996 $aArctic shorebirds in North America$94044247 997 $aUNINA
