Yet today only four companies make vaccines, and there is a growing crisis in vaccine availability. Why has this happened? This remarkable book recounts for the first time a devastating episode in 1955 at Cutter Laboratories in Berkeley, California, that has led many pharmaceutical companies to abandon vaccine manufacture. Drawing on interviews with public health officials, pharmaceutical company executives, attorneys, Cutter employees, and victims of the vaccine, as well as on previously unavailable archives, Dr. Paul Offit offers a full account of the Cutter disaster. He describes the nation's relief when the polio vaccine was developed by Jonas Salk in 1955, the production of the vaccine at industrial facilities such as the one operated by Cutter, and the tragedy that occurred when 200,000 people were inadvertently injected with live virulent polio virus: 70,000 became ill, 200 were permanently paralyzed, and 10 died. Dr. Offit also explores how, as a consequence of the tragedy, one jury's verdict set in motion events that eventually suppressed the production of vaccines already licensed and deterred the development of new vaccines that hold the promise of preventing other fatal diseases. 606 $aPoliomyelitis$xVaccination$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aVaccines$zUnited States 606 $aPoliomyelitis vaccine$xHistory 615 0$aPoliomyelitis$xVaccination$xHistory. 615 0$aVaccines 615 0$aPoliomyelitis vaccine$xHistory. 676 $a614.5490973 700 $aOffit$b Paul A.$0866942 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910818252603321 996 $aThe Cutter incident$93969785 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01280oam 2200433Ka 450 001 9910698258803321 005 20061101105356.0 010 $a1-4294-5686-8 035 $a(CKB)1000000000470867 035 $a(OCoLC)54885613 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000470867 100 $a20040405d2003 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAirpower$b[electronic resource] $emyths and facts /$fPhillip S. Literature and references to the corresponding methodical approach are given to facilitate the access to the elementary basics. It also contains constructive explanations and critical annotations on modelling glued laminated timber for bending, tension and compression tests. Finally, the relevance of the simulation results for practical issues is discussed. 517 $aComputergestützte Verfahren zur pragmatischen Beurteilung der Tragwiderstände von Brettschichtholz 517 $aComputergestützte Verfahren zur pragmatischen Beurteilung der Tragwiderstände von Brettschichtholz 606 $aHistory of engineering and technology$2bicssc 610 $abending strength 610 $aBiegefestigkeit 610 $aBrettschichtholz 610 $acompression strength 610 $acomputer simulation 610 $aComputersimulation 610 $aDruckfestigkeitKarlsruhe Rechenmodell 610 $aglued laminated timber 610 $aKarlsruher Rechenmodell 610 $atensile strength 610 $aZugfestigkeit 615 7$aHistory of engineering and technology 700 $aFrese$b Matthias$4auth$01290759 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910346773403321 996 $aComputergestützte Verfahren zur pragmatischen Beurteilung der Tragwiderstände von Brettschichtholz: Zusammenfassung exemplarischer Simulationsstudien$93038238 997 $aUNINA
