The strikers sought to make the companies retreat from decades of antiunion repression, abide by the newly enacted federal labor law, and recognize their union. For two months a grinding struggle unfolded, punctuated by bloody clashes in which police, company agents, and National Guardsmen ruthlessly beat and shot unionists. At least sixteen died and hundreds more were injured before the strike ended in failure. The violence and brutality of the Little Steel Strike became legendary. In many ways it was the last great strike in modern America. Traditionally the Little Steel Strike has been understood as a modest setback for steel workers, one that actually confirmed the potency of New Deal reforms and did little to impede the progress of the labor movement. However, The Last Great Strike tells a different story about the conflict and its significance for unions and labor rights. More than any other strike, it laid bare the contradictions of the industrial labor movement, the resilience of corporate power, and the limits of New Deal liberalism at a crucial time in American history. 606 $aLittle Steel Strike, U.S., 1937 606 $aIron and steel workers$xLabor unions$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aNew Deal, 1933-1939 607 $aUnited States$xHistory$y1933-1945 610 $a1930s labor disputes. 610 $a20th century america. 610 $a20th century labor movement. 610 $aamerican history. 610 $aamerican steel. 610 $acapitalism. 610 $adeadly labor disputes. 610 $adepression era labor. 610 $aindustrial labor movements. 610 $aindustrial labor. 610 $alabor history. 610 $alabor organization. 610 $alabor rights. 610 $alabor riots. 610 $alabor strikes of the 1930s. 610 $alabor studies. 610 $alast great strike. 610 $alast major strike in america. 610 $alittle steel strike. 610 $alittle steel. 610 $anew deal reforms. 610 $asocial history. 610 $asteel industry. 610 $aunion history. 610 $aunion rights. 610 $aunited steel workers. 610 $aus labor movement. 615 0$aLittle Steel Strike, U.S., 1937. 615 0$aIron and steel workers$xLabor unions$xHistory 615 0$aNew Deal, 1933-1939. 676 $a331.892/8691097309043 700 $aWhite$b Ahmed$f1970-$01707146 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910818109503321 996 $aThe last great strike$94095125 997 $aUNINA
