They enquire into the boundaries between debate, polemics, and intolerance, and address their manifestations in both philosophy and religion. This cross-cultural and inclusive approach shows that debate and polemics are not so different as often assumed, since polemics may also indicate that ultimate values are at stake. Polemics can also have a positive effect, stimulating further cultural development. Intolerance is more straightforwardly negative. Religious intolerance is often a justification for politics, but also elite rationalism can become totalitarian. The volume also highlights the importance of the fluency of minorities in the dominant discourses and of their ability to develop contrapuntal lines of thought within a common cultural discourse. 410 0$aThemes in biblical narrative;$vv. 25. 606 $aReligions$xRelations$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aPhilosophy$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aToleration$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aReligious tolerance$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aPolemics$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aPolitics and culture$xHistory$yTo 1500 615 0$aReligions$xRelations$xHistory 615 0$aPhilosophy$xHistory 615 0$aToleration$xHistory 615 0$aReligious tolerance$xHistory 615 0$aPolemics$xHistory 615 0$aPolitics and culture$xHistory 676 $a200.93 702 $aKooten$b Geurt Hendrik van$f1969- 702 $aRuiten$b J. van$g(Jacques), 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910817993703321 996 $aIntolerance, polemics, and debate in antiquity$94071735 997 $aUNINA
