"Drawing from extensive newspaper, television, and radio news coverage, legal and law enforcement documents, and ethnographic interviews with journalists, RCMP officers, and Native leaders, Lambertus examines the construction and dissemination of vilifying stereotyped portrayals of Native people. Employing a variety of methodologies including discourse analysis, the investigation shows how the values and perspectives of local communities, media, and law enforcement became overshadowed by those of 'outsiders' during the course of the event. The study culminates with an assessment of the structural elements that contributed to the damaging media portrayals. Provocative and convincingly argued, Wartime Images, Peacetime Wounds opens new avenues for the study of the representation of minorities in the news and for the study of news media in general."--Jacket. 606 $aGustafsen Lake Standoff, B.C., 1995$xPress coverage 606 $aShuswap Indians$xPress coverage 606 $aShuswap Indians$xCivil rights 606 $aShuswap Indians$xGovernment relations 607 $aBritish Columbia$xEthnic relations 607 $aBritish Columbia$xPolitics and government 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aGustafsen Lake Standoff, B.C., 1995$xPress coverage. 615 0$aShuswap Indians$xPress coverage. 615 0$aShuswap Indians$xCivil rights. 615 0$aShuswap Indians$xGovernment relations. 676 $a302.23/089/979071175 700 $aLambertus$b Sandra$01594977 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910817905303321 996 $aWartime images, peacetime wounds$93915712 997 $aUNINA
