In The Virgin of Guadalupe and the Conversos, Marie-Theresa Hernández unmasks the secret lives of conversos and judaizantes and their likely influence onthe Catholic Church in the New World. The terms converso and judaizante are often used for descendants of Spanish Jews (the Sephardi, or Sefarditas as they are sometimes called), who converted under duress to Christianity in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. There are few, if any, archival documents that prove the existence of judaizantes after the Spanish expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and the Portuguese expulsion in 1497, as it is unlikely that a secret Jew in sixteenth-century Spain would have documented his allegiance to the Law of Moses, thereby providing evidence for the Inquisition. On a Da Vinci Code - style quest, Hernández persisted in hunting for a trove of forgotten manuscripts at the New York Public Library. These documents, once unearthed, describe the Jewish/Christian religious beliefs of an early nineteenth-century Catholic priest in Mexico City, focusing on the relationship between the Virgin of Guadalupe and Judaism. With this discovery in hand, the author traces the cult of Guadalupe backwards to its fourteenth-century Spanish origins. The trail from that point forward can then be followed to its interface with early modern conversos and their descendants at the highest levels of the Church and the monarchy in Spain and Colonial Mexico. She describes key players who were somehow immune to the dangers of the Inquisition and who were allowed the freedom to display, albeit in a camouflaged manner, vestiges of their family's Jewish identity. By exploring the narratives produced by these individuals, Hernández reveals the existence of those conversos and judaizantes who did not return to the "covenantal bond of rabbinic law," who did not publicly identify themselves as Jews, and who continued to exhibit in their influential writings a covert allegiance and longing for a Jewish past. This is a spellbinding and controversial story that offers a fresh perspective on the origins and history of conversos. 410 0$aLatinidad. 606 $aChristianity and other religions$xJudaism 606 $aJudaism$xRelations$xChristianity 606 $aCrypto-Jews$zMexico$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aCrypto-Jews$zMexico$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aGuadalupe, Our Lady of 610 $aManuel Espinoza de los Monteros. 615 0$aChristianity and other religions$xJudaism. 615 0$aJudaism$xRelations$xChristianity. 615 0$aCrypto-Jews$xHistory 615 0$aCrypto-Jews$xHistory 615 0$aGuadalupe, Our Lady of. 676 $a261.2/60972 700 $aHerna?ndez$b Marie Theresa$f1952-$01594422 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910817446503321 996 $aThe virgin of Guadalupe and the conversos$94075481 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04653nam 22006015 450 001 9910591034703321 005 20251113185632.0 010 $a981-19-2948-3 024 7 $a10.1007/978-981-19-2948-9 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC7080143 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL7080143 035 $a(CKB)24779152700041 035 $a(PPN)264957636 035 $a(DE-He213)978-981-19-2948-9 035 $a(EXLCZ)9924779152700041 100 $a20220901d2022 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aProceedings of 7th International Conference on Harmony Search, Soft Computing and Applications $eICHSA 2022 /$fedited by Joong Hoon Kim, Kusum Deep, Zong Woo Geem, Ali Sadollah, Anupam Yadav 205 $a1st ed. 2022. 210 1$aSingapore :$cSpringer Nature Singapore :$cImprint: Springer,$d2022. 215 $a1 online resource (xv, 522 pages) $cillustrations (chiefly color) 225 1 $aLecture Notes on Data Engineering and Communications Technologies,$x2367-4520 ;$v140 311 08$aPrint version: Kim, Joong Hoon Proceedings of 7th International Conference on Harmony Search, Soft Computing and Applications Singapore : Springer,c2022 9789811929472 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCOVID-19 Chest X-rays Classification through The Fusion of Deep Transfer Learning and Machine Learning Methods -- Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Harmony Search Algorithm in Geomechanics and its Applications -- The Robustness of Tuned Liquid Dampers Optimized via Metaheuristic Methods -- Hybrid Generalized Normal Distribution Optimization with Sine Cosine Algorithm for Global Optimization -- Sensivity analysis on Structural Optimization using Jaya Algorithm -- Upgrading urban drainage systems for extreme rainfall events using multi-objective optimization: Case study of Tan Hoa-Lo Gom drainage catchment, HCMC, Vietnam -- Comparative Study on Optimization of Cantilever Retaining Walls via Several Metaheuristics -- Optimal Solving of Uninhabited Combat Air Vehicle Path Planning Using Neural Network Algorithm -- Cost Optimization and Comparison of Rectangular Cross-Section Reinforced Concrete Beams Using TS500, Eurocode 2 and ACI 318 code -- Training Neural Networks with Lévy Flight Distribution Algorithm -- Pressure Management in Water Distribution Networks Using Optimal Locating and Operating of Pressure Reducing Valves -- The Optimal Location and Dimensions of Flood Control Detention Dams at Kan River Basin, Tehran, Iran -- Minimization the CO2 Emission for Optimum Design of T-Shape Reinforced Concrete (RC) Beam -- Prediction of Minimum CO2 Emission for Rectangular Shape Reinforced Concrete (RC) Beam -- A generative adversarial approach for detecting malware in Android applications using Deep learning. 330 $aThe book covers different aspects of real-world applications of optimization algorithms. It provides insights from the Seventh International Conference on Harmony Search, Soft Computing and Applications held at Virtual Conference, Seoul, South Korea, in February 2022. Harmony search (HS) is one of the most popular metaheuristic algorithms, developed in 2001 by Prof. Joong Hoon Kim and Prof. Zong Woo Geem, that mimics the improvisation process of jazz musicians to seek the best harmony. The book consists of research articles on novel and newly proposed optimization algorithms; the theoretical study of nature-inspired optimization algorithms; numerically established results of nature-inspired optimization algorithms; and real-world applications of optimization algorithms and synthetic benchmarking of optimization algorithms. 410 0$aLecture Notes on Data Engineering and Communications Technologies,$x2367-4520 ;$v140 606 $aComputational intelligence 606 $aMachine learning 606 $aAlgorithms 606 $aComputational Intelligence 606 $aMachine Learning 606 $aAlgorithms 615 0$aComputational intelligence. 615 0$aMachine learning. 615 0$aAlgorithms. 615 14$aComputational Intelligence. 615 24$aMachine Learning. 615 24$aAlgorithms. 676 $a005.1 702 $aKim$b Joong Hoon 712 12$aInternational Conference on Harmony Search, Soft Computing and Applications 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910591034703321 996 $aProceedings of 7th international conference on harmony search, soft computing and applications$93364713 997 $aUNINA
