David Bergman's social history shows how the works of these authors reflected, advanced, and criticized the values, principles, and prejudices of the culture of gay liberation. In spinning many of the most important stories gay men told of themselves in the short period between the 1969 Stonewall Riots and the devastation of the AIDS epidemic during the 1980's, the Violet Quill exerted an enormous influence on gay culture. The death toll of the AIDS epidemic, including four of the Violet Quill's seven members, has made putting such recent events into a historical context all the more important and difficult. The work of the Violet Quill expresses the joy, suffering, grief, hope, activism, and caregiving of their generation. The Violet Hour meets the urgent need for a history of the men who bore witness not only to the birth but also to the decimation of a culture. 410 0$aBetween men--between women. 606 $aGay men's writings, American$xHistory and criticism 606 $aHomosexuality and literature$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aAmerican literature$zNew York (State)$zNew York$xHistory and criticism 606 $aAmerican literature$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aGay men$zUnited States$xIntellectual life 606 $aViolet Quill (Group of writers) 606 $aGay men in literature 607 $aNew York (N.Y.)$xIntellectual life$y20th century 615 0$aGay men's writings, American$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aHomosexuality and literature$xHistory 615 0$aAmerican literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aAmerican literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aGay men$xIntellectual life. 615 0$aViolet Quill (Group of writers) 615 0$aGay men in literature. 676 $a810.9/9206642 700 $aBergman$b David$f1950-$0906135 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910817363403321 996 $aThe violet hour$93975601 997 $aUNINA
