Was chivalry really just a meaningless veneer? If true, perhaps more perplexing are the many cases where surprise or deception were not employed and advantages were therefore sacrificed. This work argues that understanding these apparent inconsistencies requires an appreciation of the moral and legal context of medieval strategic thought. Through taking this approach, chivalric warfare can be seen for what it was - a very real framework or system of rules that allowed a result or decision to be reached which could be accepted by both sides. 410 0$aHistory of warfare ;$vv. 55. 606 $aMilitary art and science$zEurope$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aSurprise (Military science)$xHistory 606 $aDeception (Military science)$xHistory 606 $aChivalry$zEurope$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aMiddle Ages 607 $aEurope$xHistory, Military$yTo 1500 615 0$aMilitary art and science$xHistory 615 0$aSurprise (Military science)$xHistory. 615 0$aDeception (Military science)$xHistory. 615 0$aChivalry$xHistory 615 0$aMiddle Ages. 676 $a355/.47409024 700 $aWhetham$b David$01705374 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910817292403321 996 $aJust wars and moral victories$94092002 997 $aUNINA
