How are evangelical Christians persuading young people to wait until marriage? Christine J. Gardner looks closely at the language of the chastity movement and discovers a savvy campaign that uses sex to "sell" abstinence. Drawing from interviews with evangelical leaders and teenagers, she examines the strategy to shift from a negative "just say no" approach to a positive one: "just say yes" to great sex within marriage. Making Chastity Sexy sheds new light on an abstinence campaign that has successfully recast a traditionally feminist idea-"my body, my choice"-into a powerful message, but one that Gardner suggests may ultimately reduce evangelicalism's transformative power. Focusing on the United States, her study also includes a comparative dimension by examining the export of this evangelical agenda to sub-Saharan Africa. 606 $aSex instruction for teenagers - Religious aspects - Christianity 606 $aSex instruction for teenagers -- Religious aspects -- Christianity 606 $aSexual abstinence - Religious aspects - Christianity 606 $aSexual abstinence -- Religious aspects -- Christianity 606 $aSexual abstinence - Study and teaching - United States 606 $aSexual abstinence -- Study and teaching -- United States 606 $aTeenagers - Sexual behavior - United States 606 $aTeenagers -- Sexual behavior -- United States 606 $aSexual abstinence$xChristianity$xReligious aspects$zUnited States 606 $aSexual abstinence$xStudy and teaching$zUnited States 606 $aTeenagers$xSexual behavior 606 $aSex instruction for teenagers$xReligious aspects$xChristianity 606 $aGender & Ethnic Studies$2HILCC 606 $aSocial Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aGender Studies & Sexuality$2HILCC 610 $aabstinence campaigns. 610 $aamerican society. 610 $aamerican teens. 610 $achastity movement. 610 $achastity. 610 $achristian education. 610 $aevangelical christians. 610 $aevangelical leaders. 610 $afeminist ideals. 610 $agender and sexuality. 610 $agender politics. 610 $ainterviews. 610 $amarriage and sex. 610 $amodern society. 610 $anonfiction study. 610 $apersuasion. 610 $apledge of abstinence. 610 $arhetorical analysis. 610 $asex and relationships. 610 $asex saturated world. 610 $asex. 610 $asociology. 610 $asub saharan africa. 610 $atheology. 610 $aunited states. 610 $avirginity. 610 $ayoung people. 615 4$aSex instruction for teenagers - Religious aspects - Christianity. 615 4$aSex instruction for teenagers -- Religious aspects -- Christianity. 615 4$aSexual abstinence - Religious aspects - Christianity. 615 4$aSexual abstinence -- Religious aspects -- Christianity. 615 4$aSexual abstinence - Study and teaching - United States. 615 4$aSexual abstinence -- Study and teaching -- United States. 615 4$aTeenagers - Sexual behavior - United States. 615 4$aTeenagers -- Sexual behavior -- United States. 615 0$aSexual abstinence$xChristianity$xReligious aspects 615 0$aSexual abstinence$xStudy and teaching 615 0$aTeenagers$xSexual behavior 615 0$aSex instruction for teenagers$xReligious aspects$xChristianity 615 7$aGender & Ethnic Studies 615 7$aSocial Sciences 615 7$aGender Studies & Sexuality 676 $a261.8/35708350973 700 $aGardner$b Christine J., $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01008247 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910816938603321 996 $aMaking Chastity Sexy$92325128 997 $aUNINA
