Similar analyses have been done for Latin America, Europe, and the United States, but none in the context of low-income countries. Using public financial management indicators, as measured in two recent assessments related to the Heavily-Indebted Poor Countries Initiative, this study shows that improving public financial management leads to better fiscal outcomes, as measured by the overall fiscal balance and external debt levels, after controlling for other characteristics that might alter fiscal outcomes. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2008/217 606 $aFiscal policy$zAfrica, Sub-Saharan$xEconometric models 606 $aFinance, Public$zAfrica, Sub-Saharan$xEconometric models 606 $aDebts, Public$zAfrica, Sub-Saharan$xEconometric models 606 $aBudgeting$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 606 $aNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: General$2imf 606 $aNational Budget$2imf 606 $aBudget Systems$2imf 606 $aNational Budget, Deficit, and Debt: General$2imf 606 $aFiscal Policy$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aBudgeting & financial management$2imf 606 $aPublic financial management (PFM)$2imf 606 $aBudget planning and preparation$2imf 606 $aExpenditure$2imf 606 $aBudget execution and treasury management$2imf 606 $aFiscal stance$2imf 606 $aFinance, Public$2imf 606 $aBudget$2imf 606 $aExpenditures, Public$2imf 606 $aFiscal policy$2imf 607 $aSão Tomé and Príncipe, Democratic Republic of$2imf 615 0$aFiscal policy$xEconometric models. 615 0$aFinance, Public$xEconometric models. 615 0$aDebts, Public$xEconometric models. 615 7$aBudgeting 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aPublic Finance 615 7$aNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: General 615 7$aNational Budget 615 7$aBudget Systems 615 7$aNational Budget, Deficit, and Debt: General 615 7$aFiscal Policy 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aBudgeting & financial management 615 7$aPublic financial management (PFM) 615 7$aBudget planning and preparation 615 7$aExpenditure 615 7$aBudget execution and treasury management 615 7$aFiscal stance 615 7$aFinance, Public 615 7$aBudget 615 7$aExpenditures, Public 615 7$aFiscal policy 676 $a339.520967 700 $aCabezon$b Ezequiel$01625075 701 $aPrakash$b Tej$01625076 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910816887203321 996 $aPublic Financial Management and Fiscal Outcomes in Sub-Saharan African Heavily-Indebted Poor Countries$93960369 997 $aUNINA
