Pfaltzgraff Jr. develop alternative models for assessing the challenges of a nuclear Iran for U.S. security. Through three scenario models, the book explores the political, strategic, and operational challenges facing the United States in a post-Cold War world. The authors concentrate on the type of nuclear capability Iran might develop; the conditions under which Iran might resort to threatened or actual weapons use; the extent to which Iran's military strategy and declaratory policy might embolden Iran and its proxies to pursue more aggressive policies in the region and vis-à-vis the United States; and Iran's ability to transfer nuclear materials to others within and outside the region, possibly sparking a nuclear cascade. Drawing on recent post-Cold War deterrence theory, the authors consider Iran's nuclear ambitions as they relate to its foreign policy objectives, domestic politics, and role in the Islamic world, and they suggest specific approaches to improve U.S. defense and deterrence planning. 606 $aNuclear weapons$zIran 607 $aIran$xMilitary policy 607 $aIran$xPolitics and government$y1997- 607 $aIran$xForeign relations$y1997- 607 $aUnited States$xRelations$zIran 615 0$aNuclear weapons 676 $a355.02/170955 700 $aDavis$b Jacquelyn K$01648204 701 $aPfaltzgraff$b Robert L.$cJr.,$f1934-$01648205 701 $aArlow$b Noah$01648206 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910816462503321 996 $aAnticipating a nuclear Iran$93996210 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01118nam a2200289 i 4500 001 991002322739707536 005 20240701094830.0 008 010315s1972 it af r 0|1 p ita d 035 $ab10348116-39ule_inst 035 $aEXGIL101987$9ExL 040 $aBibl.
