INTRODUCTION""; ""II. STYLIZED FACTS ABOUT GROWTH IN INDIA""; ""III. DO POLICIES MATTER?""; ""IV. CONCLUSION""; ""REFERENCES"" 330 3 $aThis paper examines how growth has varied across India's states. It finds that (i) the income gap between rich and poor states has widened; (ii) rich and faster-growing states have been more effective in reducing poverty; (iii) poor and slower-growing states have had little success in generating private sector jobs; (iv) labor and capital flows do little to close income gaps; and (v) the volatility in economic growth is greatest in poor states. Differences in states' policies affect the cross-state pattern of growth. Greater private sector investment, smaller governments, and better institutions are found to have a positive impact on growth. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/103 606 $aEconomic development$xEconometric models 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aSocial Services and Welfare$2imf 606 $aPoverty and Homelessness$2imf 606 $aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions$2imf 606 $aGovernment Policy$2imf 606 $aProvision and Effects of Welfare Program$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics: General$2imf 606 $aEmployment$2imf 606 $aUnemployment$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 606 $aIntergenerational Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aAggregate Human Capital$2imf 606 $aAggregate Labor Productivity$2imf 606 $aWelfare, Well-Being, and Poverty: General$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aincome economics$2imf 606 $aSocial welfare & social services$2imf 606 $aPoverty & precarity$2imf 606 $aPersonal income$2imf 606 $aPoverty reduction$2imf 606 $aPoverty$2imf 606 $aIncome$2imf 606 $aLabor economics$2imf 606 $aEconomic theory$2imf 607 $aIndia$xEconomic policy 607 $aIndia$2imf 615 0$aEconomic development$xEconometric models. 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aSocial Services and Welfare 615 7$aPoverty and Homelessness 615 7$aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions 615 7$aGovernment Policy 615 7$aProvision and Effects of Welfare Program 615 7$aLabor Economics: General 615 7$aEmployment 615 7$aUnemployment 615 7$aWages 615 7$aIntergenerational Income Distribution 615 7$aAggregate Human Capital 615 7$aAggregate Labor Productivity 615 7$aWelfare, Well-Being, and Poverty: General 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aincome economics 615 7$aSocial welfare & social services 615 7$aPoverty & precarity 615 7$aPersonal income 615 7$aPoverty reduction 615 7$aPoverty 615 7$aIncome 615 7$aLabor economics 615 7$aEconomic theory 700 $aPurfield$b Catriona$01601444 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bAsia and Pacific Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910816282003321 996 $aMind the Gap?Is Economic Growth in India Leaving Some States Behind$94122212 997 $aUNINA
