Dresser travelled widely and spent time in Texas during the American Civil War. He built enormous collections of skins and eggs of birds from Europe, North America and Asia, which formed the basis of over 100 publications, including some of the finest bird books of the late nineteenth century. Dresser was a leading figure in scientific society and in the early bird conservation movement; his correspondence and diaries reveal the inner workings, motivations, personal relationships and rivalries that existed among the leading ornithologists. 606 $aOrnithology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01048358 606 $aOrnithologists$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01048356 606 $aBirds$xCollection and preservation$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00832979 606 $aBirds$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00832970 606 $aSCIENCE$xLife Sciences$xZoology$xGeneral$2bisacsh 606 $aBirds$vIdentification 606 $aBirds$vNomenclature 606 $aBirds$vClassification 606 $aBirds$xCollection and preservation 606 $aBirds$vCatalogs and collections$zGreat Britain 606 $aBirds$zEurope 606 $aOrnithology$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aOrnithologists$zGreat Britain$vBiography 607 $aGreat Britain$2fast 607 $aEurope$2fast 608 $aBiographies. 608 $aTerminology. 608 $aRecords and correspondence. 608 $aHistory. 608 $aField guides. 608 $aDiaries. 608 $aClassification. 608 $aCatalogs and collections. 608 $aBiography. 608 $aBiographies. 615 7$aOrnithology. 615 7$aOrnithologists. 615 7$aBirds$xCollection and preservation. 615 7$aBirds. 615 7$aSCIENCE$xLife Sciences$xZoology$xGeneral. 615 0$aBirds 615 0$aBirds 615 0$aBirds 615 0$aBirds$xCollection and preservation. 615 0$aBirds 615 0$aBirds 615 0$aOrnithology$xHistory 615 0$aOrnithologists 676 $a598.092 700 $aMcGhie$b Henry A.$01674217 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910816145503321 996 $aHenry Dresser and Victorian ornithology$94038862 997 $aUNINA
