Drawing from intensive fieldwork in a highly diverse North London neighborhood, Daniel Miller and Sophie Woodward focus on an everyday item-blue jeans-to learn what one simple article of clothing can tell us about our individual and social lives and challenging, by extension, the foundational anthropological presumption of "the normative." Miller and Woodward argue that blue jeans do not always represent social and cultural difference, from gender and wealth, to style and circumstance. Instead they find that jeans allow individuals to inhabit what the authors term "the ordinary." Miller and Woodward demonstrate that the emphasis on becoming ordinary is important for immigrants and the population of North London more generally, and they call into question foundational principles behind anthropology, sociology and philosophy. 606 $aClothing and dress 606 $aDenim - Social aspects 606 $aDenim -- Social aspects 606 $aJeans (Clothing) - Social aspects 606 $aJeans (Clothing) -- Social aspects 606 $aJeans (Clothing) --Social aspects 606 $aMaterial culture 606 $aMaterial culture 606 $aJeans (Clothing)$xSocial aspects 606 $aDenim$xSocial aspects 606 $aClothing and dress 606 $aMaterial culture 606 $aAnthropology$2HILCC 606 $aSocial Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aManners & Customs$2HILCC 610 $aanthropology. 610 $aclass studies. 610 $aclothes. 610 $aclothing styles. 610 $aclothing. 610 $acommunity. 610 $acultural differences. 610 $adiverse population. 610 $adiversity. 610 $aethnography. 610 $afieldwork. 610 $agender studies. 610 $aglobal dislocation. 610 $aglobal displacement. 610 $aglobal migration. 610 $aglobalization. 610 $agreat britain. 610 $aimmigrants. 610 $aimmigration. 610 $aindividual lives. 610 $ainternational relations. 610 $ajeans. 610 $anormative. 610 $anorth london. 610 $aphilosophy. 610 $asocial differences. 610 $asocial lives. 610 $asociety. 610 $asociology. 610 $awealth studies. 615 4$aClothing and dress. 615 4$aDenim - Social aspects. 615 4$aDenim -- Social aspects. 615 4$aJeans (Clothing) - Social aspects. 615 4$aJeans (Clothing) -- Social aspects. 615 4$aJeans (Clothing) --Social aspects. 615 4$aMaterial culture. 615 4$aMaterial culture. 615 0$aJeans (Clothing)$xSocial aspects 615 0$aDenim$xSocial aspects 615 0$aClothing and dress 615 0$aMaterial culture 615 7$aAnthropology 615 7$aSocial Sciences 615 7$aManners & Customs 676 $a391.476 700 $aMiller$b Daniel$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0118348 702 $aWoodward$b Sophie$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910815784403321 996 $aBlue Jeans$94040319 997 $aUNINA
