The author offers here an account of the role played by religion in political undertakings among the pre-Christian ruling elites at halls and cultic buildings. Sundqvist applies a regional approach, so as to be able to account for the specific historical, cultural and social contexts. The focus is mainly on three regions, the Lake Mälaren area in Sweden, Trøndelag in Norway, and Iceland. Since the political structure and other contextual aspects partly differed in the three regions, the religious strategies for gaining legitimacy and authorization at the sanctuaries also varied to some extent in these areas. 410 0$aStudies in the history of religions ;$vVolume 150. 606 $aReligion and politics$zScandinavia$xHistory 607 $aScandinavia$xReligion 607 $aScandinavia$xKings and rulers$xReligious life 607 $aScandinavia$xAntiquities 615 0$aReligion and politics$xHistory. 676 $a293 700 $aSundqvist$b Olof$01270324 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910815461903321 996 $aAn arena for higher powers$94114437 997 $aUNINA
