In drawing attention to the important role played by scientific knowledge, it focuses on a dimension of this transition which is often overlooked by historians. The book argues that in certain favoured regions, England underwent a process whereby useful knowledge was fused with technological 'know how' to produce the condition described here as Industrial Enlightenment. At the forefront of the process were the natural philosophers who entered into a close and productive relationship with technologists and entrepreneurs. Much of the evidence for this study is drawn from the extraordinary archival record of the activities of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) and his Soho Manufactory. The book will appeal to those keen to explore the dynamics of change in eighteenth-century England, and to those with a broad interest in the cultural history of science and technology. 606 $aIndustrial revolution$zEngland$zBirmingham 606 $aScience and industry$zEngland$zBirmingham$xHistory 607 $aBirmingham (England)$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aBirmingham (England)$xHistory$y19th century 610 $aBirmingham. 610 $aFrench Revolution. 610 $aIndustrial Enlightenment. 610 $aNapoleonic Wars. 610 $aSoho. 610 $aWest Midlands. 610 $aeighteenth-century Britain. 610 $aknowledge economy. 610 $aprotestant Nonconformity. 610 $areligious complexion. 610 $ascience cultures. 610 $atechnological process. 615 0$aIndustrial revolution 615 0$aScience and industry$xHistory. 676 $a330.94249073 700 $aJones$b Peter M.$f1949-$0249438 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910815426703321 996 $aIndustrial enlightenment$93981818 997 $aUNINA
