Exhibiting Atrocity documents the emergence of the memorial museum as a new cultural form of commemoration, and analyzes its use in efforts to come to terms with past political violence and to promote democracy and human rights. Through a global comparative approach, Amy Sodaro uses in-depth case studies of five exemplary memorial museums that commemorate a range of violent pasts and allow for a chronological and global examination of the trend: the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC; the House of Terror in Budapest, Hungary; the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre in Rwanda; the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago, Chile; and the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York. Together, these case studies illustrate the historical emergence and global spread of the memorial museum and show how this new cultural form of commemoration is intended to be used in contemporary societies around the world. 606 $aCollective memory 606 $aCrimes against humanity$xMuseums 606 $aPolitical atrocities$xMuseums 606 $aGenocide$xMuseums 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $a911 memorial. 610 $a911. 610 $agenocide. 610 $aholocaust museum. 610 $aholocaust. 610 $amemorial museum. 610 $amuseums. 610 $aseptember 11 memorial. 615 0$aCollective memory. 615 0$aCrimes against humanity$xMuseums. 615 0$aPolitical atrocities$xMuseums. 615 0$aGenocide$xMuseums. 676 $a303.6075 700 $aSodaro$b Amy, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut.$0991624 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910255445103321 996 $aExhibiting Atrocity$92269456 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02048oam 2200577Ka 450 001 9910781472103321 005 20190503073400.0 010 $a0-262-29810-4 010 $a1-283-34370-3 010 $a9786613343703 010 $a0-262-29897-X 035 $a(CKB)2550000000063685 035 $a(OCoLC)768346089 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebrary10513541 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000535618 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12234236 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000535618 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10522499 035 $a(PQKB)11732033 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3339332 035 $a(OCoLC)768346089$z(OCoLC)767808132$z(OCoLC)767952987$z(OCoLC)816873680$z(OCoLC)847929649$z(OCoLC)961563065$z(OCoLC)962673338$z(OCoLC)966211734$z(OCoLC)988529063$z(OCoLC)992078051$z(OCoLC)1037943843$z(OCoLC)1038654736$z(OCoLC)1045524995$z(OCoLC)1050700720$z(OCoLC)1058175442$z(OCoLC)1083614012 035 $a(OCoLC-P)768346089 035 $a(MaCbMITP)9174 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3339332 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10513541 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL334370 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000063685 100 $a20111214d2011 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aCurious visions of modernity $eenchantment, magic, and the sacred /$fDavid L.
