Readers are invited to look to the past to see how, then as now, people turn to storytelling to integrate and adapt to rapid social change, to reinforce or restructure community, to sell new ideas, and to refashion the past. Like the change that it reflects, the telling of stories is itself a dynamic process, in which narratives are constantly renewed, revised and reformed. The stories of an era not only assume multiple, changing forms, but also surface in unexpected domains that seem, at first, incompatible with the storytelling enterprise: domains like medicine and diplomacy. Identifying the commonalities between the storytelling approach in diverse domains helps us better understand the conventions of a specific time and place (in this case, different decades in sixteenth-century France) while simultaneously revealing sites of resistance where these conventions were tested. This understanding heightens, in turn, our awareness of the stories shaping our own era"--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aEarly modern exchange. 606 $aFrench literature$y16th century$xHistory and criticism$vCongresses 606 $aNarration (Rhetoric)$xHistory$y16th century$vCongresses 606 $aStorytelling 606 $aStorytelling$zFrance$xHistory$y16th century$vCongresses 610 $aFrance, literary studies, art, music, social change, storytelling, sixteenth-century France, tapestries, stone, modern France, French Wars of Religion, poetry, traditional technique. 615 0$aFrench literature$xHistory and criticism 615 0$aNarration (Rhetoric)$xHistory 615 0$aStorytelling. 615 0$aStorytelling$xHistory 676 $a840.9003 701 $aYandell$b Cathy$0173028 702 $aThompson$b Emily E. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910814938003321 996 $aStorytelling in Sixteenth-Century France$94082332 997 $aUNINA
