Though condemned as a dissipate and impoverishing activity, it was, in fact, a significant leisure opportunity for the working-class, which cost little for the minority of bettors involved in what was clearly little more than a 'bit of the flutter'. This book is the first national study of greyhound racing in Britain from its beginnings, to its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s, and up to its long slow decline in the late twentieth century. Much of the study will be defined by the dominating issue of working-class gambling and the bitter opposition to both it and greyhound racing, although the attractions of this 'American Night Out' will also be examined. 517 3 $aHistory of greyhound racing in Britain, 1926-2017 606 $aGreyhound racing$zGreat Britain$xHistory 606 $aWorking class$zGreat Britain$xSocial life and customs$y20th century 606 $aSocial classes$zGreat Britain$y20th century 606 $aPolitics$2mup 606 $aSociology$2bicssc 606 $aPOLITICAL SCIENCE / Comparative Politics$2bisach 606 $aSociology: sport & leisure$2thema 607 $aGrossbritannien$2gnd 610 $aBusiness. 610 $aCriminality. 610 $aGambling. 610 $aGreyhound scandal. 610 $aGreyhound. 610 $aPolicing. 610 $aRacing. 610 $aSport. 610 $aTracks. 615 0$aGreyhound racing$xHistory. 615 0$aWorking class$xSocial life and customs 615 0$aSocial classes 615 7$aPolitics 615 7$aSociology 615 7$aPOLITICAL SCIENCE / Comparative Politics 615 7$aSociology: sport & leisure 676 $a796.850941 700 $aLaybourn$b Keith$0876794 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910814869503321 996 $aGoing to the dogs$93980718 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03070nam 2200601 450 001 9910827669703321 005 20170822144154.0 010 $a1-4704-0419-2 035 $a(CKB)3360000000465002 035 $a(EBL)3114204 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000910354 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11480549 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000910354 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10932405 035 $a(PQKB)10637833 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3114204 035 $a(RPAM)13709968 035 $a(PPN)195417062 035 $a(EXLCZ)993360000000465002 100 $a20040903h20052005 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 13$aAn algebraic structure for Moufang quadrangles /$fTom de Medts 210 1$aProvidence, Rhode Island :$cAmerican Mathematical Society,$d[2005] 210 4$dİ2005 215 $a1 online resource (114 p.) 225 1 $aMemoirs of the American Mathematical Society,$x0065-9266 ;$vnumber 818 300 $a"Volume 173, number 818 (third of 5 numbers)." 311 $a0-8218-3608-0 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (page 99). 327 $a""Contents""; ""Chapter 1.
