Within ten years of his arrival in America, he had become a lawyer in Butler County, Iowa; two years later a member of the state legislature; and two years after that a captain in the Union Army. By the end of the Civil War, he was a brevet brigadier general, and in his later years he was an author and lecturer. Kenneth Lyftogt's biography details the amazing life of this remarkable man, also shedding light on the histories of the Third Iowa Volunteer Infantry and the Ninth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. 606 $aGenerals$zUnited States$vBiography 607 $aIowa$xHistory$yCivil War, 1861-1865$xRegimental histories 607 $aIowa$xHistory$yCivil War, 1861-1865$vBiography 607 $aUnited States$xHistory$yCivil War, 1861-1865$xRegimental histories 607 $aUnited States$xHistory$yCivil War, 1861-1865$vBiography 607 $aIowa$vBiography 615 0$aGenerals 676 $a973.7/477092 676 $aB 700 $aLyftogt$b Kenneth$01620130 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910814556103321 996 $aIowa's forgotten general$94084833 997 $aUNINA
