In 1999, space satellites were added to the USML. In 2002 ITAR was amended to exclude U.S. universities from having to obtain ITAR licenses when performing fundamental research involving foreign countries and/or persons. Despite this provision, there remains considerable uncertainty among university researchers about whether the regulations apply to their research leading to a rather conservative interpretation of the regulations and the imposition of burdens that might not be necessary. To explore this concern, NASA asked the NRC to organize a workshop of all stakeholders on the implications of ITAR for space science. This book presents a summary of the workshop discussions including those on perspectives on recent developments and implementation of ITAR; overarching issues; problems arising from ITAR's implementation; and opportunities for near-term actions and improvements."--NAP web site. 606 $aSpace sciences$vCongresses 606 $aAstronautics$xTechnology transfer$xGovernment policy$zUnited States$vCongresses 606 $aResearch$xLaw and legislation$vCongresses 606 $aArms transfers$xLaw and legislation$vCongresses 615 0$aSpace sciences 615 0$aAstronautics$xTechnology transfer$xGovernment policy 615 0$aResearch$xLaw and legislation 615 0$aArms transfers$xLaw and legislation 676 $a303.483 701 $aFinarelli$b Margaret G$01723403 701 $aAlexander$b Joseph K$0878317 712 02$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$bSpace Studies Board. 712 02$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$bDivision on Engineering and Physical Sciences. 712 02$aNational Academies Press (U.S.) 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910814278503321 996 $aSpace science and the international traffic in arms regulations$94124620 997 $aUNINA
