The first part of the study, "Styles of Meaning," discusses Richardson's use of the genres of sententiousness (moral sentiments and proverbs) to engage questions of ideology. Fulton shows how Richardson draws on the socially significant difference between proverbs and maxims to develop contrasting styles in which his characters establish and defend personal identities in relation to family and friends. The second part, "Meanings of Style," explores ways in which meanings created through linguistic choices in the critical domains of gender and sexuality both sustain and sometimes betray characters struggling either to control or to resist being controlled by others. A contribution to both critical discussion of eighteenth-century fiction and to discourse stylistics committed to relating literary texts to their social and cultural contexts, this study introduces a mode of literary stylistic analysis with exciting possibilities for cultural studies. 606 $aEnglish literature 615 0$aEnglish literature. 676 $a823/.6 700 $aFulton$b Gordon D$01484625 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782717203321 996 $aStyles of meaning and meanings of style in Richardson's Clarissa$93703361 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02408nam 2200457 450 001 9910814190803321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a1-62273-109-3 035 $a(CKB)3710000000829414 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4647855 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4647855 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11249204 035 $a(OCoLC)957128297 035 $a(PPN)198678916 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000829414 100 $a20160906h20162016 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 00$aPolitics and web 2.0Evandro Oliveira $ethe participation gap /$fby Peter Dahlgren [and six others] ; edited by Gisela Goncalves, Joaquim Paulo Serra 210 1$aWilmington, Delaware :$cVernon Press,$d2016. 210 4$d©2016 215 $a1 online resource (169 pages) $cillustrations, tables 311 $a1-62273-099-2 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references at the end of each chapters and index. 327 $gIntroduction /$rJ. Bush from his Democratic opponent, Al Gore. The outcome of the election rested on Florida's 25 electoral votes, and legal wrangling continued for 36 days. Then, abruptly, one of the most controversial Supreme Court decisions in U.S. history, Bush v. Gore, cut short the battle. Since the Florida debacle we have witnessed a partisan war over election rules. Election litigation has skyrocketed, and election time brings out inevitable accusations by political partisans of voter fraud and voter suppression. These allegations have shaken public confidence, as campaigns deploy "armies of lawyers" and the partisan press revs up when elections are expected to be close and the stakes are high.Richard L. Hasen, a respected authority on election law, chronicles and analyzes the battles over election rules from 2000 to the present. From a nonpartisan standpoint he explores the rising number of election-related lawsuits and charges of voter fraud as well as the decline of public confidence in fair results. He explains why future election disputes will be worse than previous ones-more acrimonious, more distorted by unsubstantiated allegations, and amplified by social media. No reader will fail to conclude with Hasen that election reform is an urgent priority, one that demands the attention of conscientious citizens and their elected representatives. Also available: The Fraudulent Fraud Squad, an e-excerpt from The Voting WarsReleased February 2012 9780300187489 $1.99 606 $aElection law$zUnited States 606 $aElections$xCorrupt practices$zUnited States 606 $aContested elections$zUnited States 615 0$aElection law 615 0$aElections$xCorrupt practices 615 0$aContested elections 676 $a342.73/07 700 $aHasen$b Richard L$01104567 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910959935103321 996 $aThe voting wars$94360040 997 $aUNINA
