Daredevil. Captain Marvel. The Human Fly. Drawing on DC and Marvel comics from the 1950's to the 1990's and marshaling insights from three burgeoning fields of inquiry in the humanities-disability studies, death and dying studies, and comics studies-the book seeks to redefine the contemporary understanding of the superhero. Beginning in the Silver Age, the genre increasingly challenged and complicated its hypermasculine, quasi-eugenicist biases through such disabled figures as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and the Doom Patrol. The author traces how the superhero became increasingly vulnerable, ill, and mortal in this era. He then proceeds to a reinterpretation of characters and series-some familiar (Superman), some obscure (She-Thing). 606 $aComic books, strips, etc$xHistory and criticism 606 $aDeath in literature 606 $aPeople with disabilities in literature 606 $aBody image in literature 606 $aGraphic novels$xHistory and criticism 615 0$aComic books, strips, etc.$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aDeath in literature. 615 0$aPeople with disabilities in literature. 615 0$aBody image in literature. 615 0$aGraphic novels$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a741.5/9 700 $aAlaniz$b Jose?$01638395 702 $aHalverson$b Peter D. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910813994003321 996 $aDeath, disability, and the superhero$94087670 997 $aUNINA
