TAXATION AND BENEFITS RELATED TO JOB STATUS"" 330 3 $aThe labor participation rate in Slovenia has been lower than in the EU-15 (the members states prior to May 2004), particularly for the low-income and older individuals. Using simulations of tax and social benefits and public pensions, the paper shows how the current tax, welfare, and pension systems create disincentives to work among these groups. The paper finds that incentives to retire early are strong for men, especially low-wage earners. The marginal effective tax rates also make it costly for low-income individuals to work and negatively affect the probability of participating. The paper proposes reform measures to enhance work incentives and labor participation, which will be crucial for dealing with population aging and for achieving higher potential growth in Slovenia. 410 0$aIMF working paper ;$vWP/06/298. 606 $aLabor supply$zSlovenia 606 $aPublic welfare$zSlovenia 606 $aIncome tax$zSlovenia 606 $aPensions$zSlovenia 606 $aEarly retirement$zSlovenia 615 0$aLabor supply 615 0$aPublic welfare 615 0$aIncome tax 615 0$aPensions 615 0$aEarly retirement 700 $aEgoume-Bossogo$b Philippe$01670362 701 $aTuladhar$b Anita$01670363 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bEuropean Dept. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910813816303321 996 $aTax, Welfare, and Pension Reforms in Slovenia$94032175 997 $aUNINA
