Drawing on new research in religiously motivated prosociality, evolution of cooperation, and system theory, this book describes how fluctuations in individuals' strategic environment give impetus to a self-organizatory process where ritual behavior works to alleviate uncertainties in social commitment. It also traces the dynamic roles played by emotions, social norms, and socioeconomic context. While exploring the social functions of ritual and revivalist behavior, the book seeks to avoid the fallacies that result from disregarding their explicit religious character. To illustrate these processes, a case study of Christian revivals in early 19th-century Finland is included. The thesis of the book is relevant to theories of the evolution of religion and the role of religion in organizing human societies. 410 0$aReligion and reason ;$v53. 606 $aAdaptability (Psychology) 606 $aReligion and sociology 606 $aRevivals$zFinland$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aSocial systems 606 $aSystem theory 610 $aReligious revivals. 610 $aevolution of cooperation. 610 $aritual behavior. 610 $asocial systems. 615 0$aAdaptability (Psychology) 615 0$aReligion and sociology. 615 0$aRevivals$xHistory 615 0$aSocial systems. 615 0$aSystem theory. 676 $a306.6/69094897 686 $aBE 2200$2rvk 700 $aHeimola$b Mikko$f1979-$01618124 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910813712403321 996 $aFrom deprived to revived$93949667 997 $aUNINA
