Using rich new untapped archives, States of Delinquency is the first book to explore the experiences of young Mexican Americans, African Americans, and ethnic Euro-Americans in California correctional facilities including Whittier State School for Boys and the Preston School of Industry. Miroslava Chávez-García examines the ideologies and practices used by state institutions as they began to replace families and communities in punishing youth, and explores the application of science and pseudo-scientific research in the disproportionate classification of youths of color as degenerate. She also shows how these boys and girls, and their families, resisted increasingly harsh treatment and various kinds of abuse, including sterilization. 410 0$aAmerican Crossroads 606 $aCrime and race - California - History 606 $aCrime and race -- California -- History 606 $aEugenics - California - History 606 $aEugenics -- California -- History 606 $aJuvenile delinquents - California - History 606 $aJuvenile delinquents -- California -- History 606 $aJuvenile justice, Administration of - California - History 606 $aMinority youth - California - History 606 $aMinority youth -- California -- History 606 $aPreston School of Industry (Ione, Calif.) 606 $aPreston School of Industry (Ione, Calif.) 606 $aWhittier State School (Whittier, Calif.) 606 $aWhittier State School (Whittier, Calif.) 606 $aJuvenile justice, Administration of$xHistory$zCalifornia 606 $aMinority youth$xHistory$zCalifornia 606 $aJuvenile delinquents$xHistory$zCalifornia 606 $aCrime and race$xHistory$zCalifornia 606 $aEugenics$xHistory$zCalifornia 606 $aSocial Welfare & Social Work$2HILCC 606 $aSocial Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aCriminology, Penology & Juvenile Delinquency$2HILCC 610 $a19th century california. 610 $a19th century crime. 610 $a20th century california. 610 $a20th century crime. 610 $aafrican americans and justice system. 610 $aamerican criminal system. 610 $acalifornia history. 610 $acrime and juveniles. 610 $acrime and punishment. 610 $acrime and racism. 610 $acrime and sociology. 610 $acrime. 610 $acriminal investigation. 610 $acriminology. 610 $ajuvenile crime. 610 $ajuvenile justice system. 610 $ajuveniles and punishment. 610 $amexican americans and crime. 610 $apreston school of industry. 610 $aracism in justice system. 610 $awestern us history. 610 $awhittier state school for boys. 615 4$aCrime and race - California - History. 615 4$aCrime and race -- California -- History. 615 4$aEugenics - California - History. 615 4$aEugenics -- California -- History. 615 4$aJuvenile delinquents - California - History. 615 4$aJuvenile delinquents -- California -- History. 615 4$aJuvenile justice, Administration of - California - History. 615 4$aMinority youth - California - History. 615 4$aMinority youth -- California -- History. 615 4$aPreston School of Industry (Ione, Calif.). 615 4$aPreston School of Industry (Ione, Calif.). 615 4$aWhittier State School (Whittier, Calif.). 615 4$aWhittier State School (Whittier, Calif.). 615 0$aJuvenile justice, Administration of$xHistory 615 0$aMinority youth$xHistory 615 0$aJuvenile delinquents$xHistory 615 0$aCrime and race$xHistory 615 0$aEugenics$xHistory 615 7$aSocial Welfare & Social Work 615 7$aSocial Sciences 615 7$aCriminology, Penology & Juvenile Delinquency 676 $a364.3609794 700 $aChavez-Garcia$b Miroslava, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01677707 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910813556203321 996 $aStates of Delinquency$94044796 997 $aUNINA
