They assumed that St. Anthony's fire and ignis sacer ("sacred fire") recorded in medieval texts represented the same disease, ergotism. This interpretative method, lacking a textual basis in the sources, has been incorrectly followed by historians till now. This book examines this historical prejudice through textual analysis, comparing diverse medieval and early modern sources. A striking semantic complexity emerges that changes the concept of St. Anthony's fire and modifies our understanding of diseases in general. This research illuminates aspects of the history of medicine, society, and hospitals. 606 $aErgotism$xSocial aspects$xHistory 606 $aErysipelas$xSocial aspects$xHistory 606 $aErgotism$xDiagnosis$xHistory 606 $aDiagnosis$xHistory 608 $aHistory.$2fast 610 $aSt. Anthony's fire. 610 $aepidemic disease. 610 $aergotism. 610 $aignis sacer. 615 0$aErgotism$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aErysipelas$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aErgotism$xDiagnosis$xHistory. 615 0$aDiagnosis$xHistory. 676 $a616.009 700 $aFoscati$b Alessandra$0617332 701 $aFoscati$b Alessandra$0617332 702 $aGordon$b Fr$g(Francis), 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP# 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910813114703321 996 $aSaint Anthony's fire from antiquity to the eighteenth century$94109074 997 $aUNINA
