It focuses on changing conceptualizations of ownership and emphasizes the persistent influence of the English common law on Virginia's postcolonial political culture. The book explains how the traditional characteristics of land tenure became subverted by the dynamic contractual relations of a commercial economy and assesses the political consequences of the law reforms that were necessitated by these developments. Nineteenth-century reforms seeking to reconcile the common law with modern commercial practices embraced new democratic expressions about the economic and political power of labor, and thereby encouraged the idea that slavery was an essential element in sustaining republican government in Virginia. By the 1850s, the ownership of human property had replaced the ownership of land as the distinguishing basis for political power, with tragic consequences for the Old Dominion. 410 0$aCambridge studies on the American South. 606 $aSlaveholders$xPolitical activity$zVirginia$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aLand tenure$xPolitical aspects$zVirginia$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aCommon law$zVirginia$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aSlavery$xPolitical aspects$zVirginia$xHistory$y19th century 607 $aVirginia$xPolitics and government$y1775-1865 607 $aVirginia$xEconomic conditions$y19th century 615 0$aSlaveholders$xPolitical activity$xHistory 615 0$aLand tenure$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 615 0$aCommon law$xHistory 615 0$aSlavery$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 676 $a975.5/03 700 $aCurtis$b Christopher Michael$01722298 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910812628803321 996 $aJefferson's freeholders and the politics of ownership in the Old Dominion$94122548 997 $aUNINA
