The work argues that playwrights of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century England recognized and constructed richly diverse tropes of female homoerotic desire. Writers place female characters in erotic situations with other female characters in playful scenarios of mistaken identity, in anxious moments of amorous intrigue, in predatory situations and in enthusiastic, utopian representations of romantic love. These plays indicate an awareness of female homoeroticism in early modern England and belie statements that literary evidence of homosexuality was concerned primarily with men. 410 0$aEarly modern cultural studies. 606 $aEnglish drama$yEarly modern and Elizabethan, 1500-1600$xHistory and criticism 606 $aHomosexuality and literature$zEngland$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aHomosexuality and literature$zEngland$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aEnglish drama$y17th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aLesbians in literature 606 $aWomen in literature 615 0$aEnglish drama$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aHomosexuality and literature$xHistory 615 0$aHomosexuality and literature$xHistory 615 0$aEnglish drama$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aLesbians in literature. 615 0$aWomen in literature. 676 $a822/.309353 700 $aWalen$b Denise A$01678524 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910812397903321 996 $aConstructions of female homoeroticism in early modern drama$94046249 997 $aUNINA
