Defining God : truth and power, A.D. 325-361. 330 $aDuring the fourth century A.D., theological controversy divided Christian communities throughout the Eastern half of the Roman Empire. Not only was the truth about God at stake, but also the authority of church leaders, whose legitimacy depended on their claims to represent that truth. In this book, Galvao-Sobrinho argues that out of these disputes was born a new style of church leadership, one in which the power of the episcopal office was greatly increased. The author shows how these disputes compelled church leaders repeatedly to assert their orthodoxy and legitimacy-tasks that required them to mobilize their congregations and engage in action that continuously projected their power in the public arena. These developments were largely the work of prelates of the first half of the fourth century, but the style of command they inaugurated became the basis for a dynamic model of ecclesiastical leadership found throughout late antiquity. 410 0$aJoan Palevsky imprint in classical literature. 606 $aChurch history$yPrimitive and early church, ca. 30-600 606 $aTheology, Doctrinal$xHistory$yEarly church, ca. 30-600 606 $aChristian leadership$xHistory$yEarly church, ca. 30-600 606 $aArianism 610 $aalexandria. 610 $aancient history. 610 $aantioch. 610 $aarian controversy. 610 $aarsenius. 610 $aathanasius. 610 $achristian communities. 610 $achristian history. 610 $achristianity. 610 $achurch fathers. 610 $achurch history. 610 $achurch leaders. 610 $acivic. 610 $adiplomacy. 610 $adoctrinal disputes. 610 $aecclesiastical leadership. 610 $aengaging. 610 $afaith. 610 $afourth century. 610 $agod and religion. 610 $agod. 610 $ahistorical. 610 $ahistory of christianity. 610 $ajesus christ. 610 $alate antiquity. 610 $alitigation. 610 $alively. 610 $aorthodoxy. 610 $apolitical. 610 $aredemption. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious. 610 $aroman empire. 610 $ascripture. 610 $aspiritual. 610 $atheological controversy. 610 $atheology. 610 $aword of god. 615 0$aChurch history 615 0$aTheology, Doctrinal$xHistory 615 0$aChristian leadership$xHistory 615 0$aArianism. 676 $a270.2 700 $aGalva?o-Sobrinho$b Carlos R$g(Carlos Roberto),$f1962-$01625620 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910811535303321 996 $aDoctrine and power$93961216 997 $aUNINA
