We use a Ricardian-gravity trade model to estimate sectoral competitiveness in individual euro area countries. Simulations on the impact of productivity shocks in Chinese textiles and machinery suggest that the required adjustment in wages, prices, and factor re-allocation is widely heterogenous across euro area countries on accounts of their different specialization patterns. This raises the question of the distribution of gains and losses from external trade shocks. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2012/221 606 $aInternational trade 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aNeoclassical Models of Trade$2imf 606 $aEmpirical Studies of Trade$2imf 606 $aSize and Spatial Distributions of Regional Economic Activity$2imf 606 $aInnovation$2imf 606 $aResearch and Development$2imf 606 $aTechnological Change$2imf 606 $aIntellectual Property Rights: General$2imf 606 $aWages, Compensation, and Labor Costs: General$2imf 606 $aTrade: General$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aTechnology$2imf 606 $ageneral issues$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aincome economics$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 606 $aTrade deficits$2imf 606 $aExports$2imf 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aInternational trade$2imf 606 $aFinancial markets$2imf 606 $aBalance of trade$2imf 607 $aEuropean Economic Community countries$xCommerce 607 $aChina$xCommerce 607 $aChina, People's Republic of$2imf 615 0$aInternational trade. 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aNeoclassical Models of Trade 615 7$aEmpirical Studies of Trade 615 7$aSize and Spatial Distributions of Regional Economic Activity 615 7$aInnovation 615 7$aResearch and Development 615 7$aTechnological Change 615 7$aIntellectual Property Rights: General 615 7$aWages, Compensation, and Labor Costs: General 615 7$aTrade: General 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aTechnology 615 7$ageneral issues 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aincome economics 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aWages 615 7$aTrade deficits 615 7$aExports 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aInternational trade 615 7$aFinancial markets 615 7$aBalance of trade 676 $a332.1/52 700 $aPerez Ruiz$b Esther$01449460 701 $aMikkelsen$b Uffe$01622007 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910811405003321 996 $aThe Trade Impact of China on EMU$93955622 997 $aUNINA
