It focusses on Duke Humphrey of Gloucester, brother of Henry V and Protector of England during Henry VI's minority. Humphrey's intellectual activity conformed itself to the Duke's own position in the kingdom: the book explores Humphrey's commission of biographies, translations of Latin texts, political pamphlets and poems, as well as his collection of manuscripts acquired both in England and from Italian humanists. Particular attention is dedicated to Humphrey's donations to the University of Oxford and to his relations with English poets and translators, such as John Lydgate and Thomas Hoccleve, highlighting his contribution towards the making of the nation's cultural autonomy. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history ;$vv. 124. 606 $aAuthors and patrons$zEngland$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aBook collecting$zEngland$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aLiterary patrons$zGreat Britain$vBiography 606 $aNobility$zGreat Britain$vBiography 606 $aHumanists$zEngland 607 $aGreat Britain$xHistory$yLancaster and York, 1399-1485$vBiography 607 $aGreat Britain$xPolitics and government$y1399-1485 607 $aEngland$xIntellectual life$y1066-1485 615 0$aAuthors and patrons$xHistory 615 0$aBook collecting$xHistory 615 0$aLiterary patrons 615 0$aNobility 615 0$aHumanists 676 $a942.04/092 700 $aPetrina$b Alessandra$0476570 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910811180403321 996 $aCultural politics in fifteenth-century England$94040874 997 $aUNINA
