Inscribed most probably in the middle of the decade that saw the Greek response to the Persian invasion, the Hekatompedon Inscription has long been recognized for its historical and religious importance. This study looks at the inscription on its own terms: the unique fusion of its visual and textual content in that most Greek of epigraphical layouts, the stoikhedon style. Such an approach leads to the question of origins: where and why was the stoikhedon style formulated and where does the Hekatompedon Inscription stand in that development? Egypt?s influential system of proportions and use of grids will be considered determinative for the very first time. 410 0$aMonumenta Graeca et Romana ;$vv. 16. 606 $aArchitectural inscriptions$zGreece$zAthens 606 $aDecoration and ornament, Architectural$zGreece$zAthens 606 $aStoichedon inscriptions 606 $aGreek language$xAlphabet 615 0$aArchitectural inscriptions 615 0$aDecoration and ornament, Architectural 615 0$aStoichedon inscriptions. 615 0$aGreek language$xAlphabet. 676 $a729/.509385 700 $aButz$b Patricia A$01626009 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910810159603321 996 $aThe art of the Hekatompedon inscription and the birth of the stoikhedon style$93961821 997 $aUNINA
