Exploring topics such as landscape, gender, modernity and military recruitment, this study details how the respective national cinemas of Japan's territories struggled under, but also engaged with, the Japanese Imperial structures. Japan was ostensibly committed to an ethos of pan-Asianism and this study explores how this sense of the transnational was conveyed cinematically across the occupied lands. Taylor-Jones traces how cinema in the region post-1945 needs to be understood not only in terms of past colonial relationships, but also in relation to how the post-colonial has engaged with shifting political alliances, the opportunities for technological advancement and knowledge, the promise of larger consumer markets, and specific historical conditions of each decade 606 $aImperialism in motion pictures 606 $aMotion pictures$zJapan$xColonies$xHistory 606 $aMotion pictures$zJapan$xHistory and criticism 606 $aNationalism in motion pictures 606 $2Film theory & criticism 615 0$aImperialism in motion pictures. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xColonies$xHistory. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aNationalism in motion pictures. 676 $a791.430952 700 $aTaylor-Jones$b Kate E.$01620378 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 801 2$bUkLoBP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910810013803321 996 $aDivine work, Japanese colonial cinema and its legacy$93953098 997 $aUNINA
