Retail exchanges and establishments have made headlines as flashpoints for conflict not only between blacks and whites, but also between whites, Mexicans, Asian Americans, and a wide variety of other ethnic groups, who have at times found themselves unwelcome at white-owned businesses. Race and Retail documents the extent to which retail establishments, both past and present, have often catered to specific ethnic and racial groups. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the original essays collected here explore selling and buying practices of nonwhite populations around the world and the barriers that shape these habits, such as racial discrimination, food deserts, and gentrification. The contributors highlight more contemporary issues by raising questions about how race informs business owners' ideas about consumer demand, resulting in substandard quality and higher prices for minorities than in predominantly white neighborhoods. In a wide-ranging exploration of the subject, they also address revitalization and gentrification in South Korean and Latino neighborhoods in California, Arab and Turkish coffeehouses and hookah lounges in South Paterson, New Jersey, and tourist capoeira consumption in Brazil. Race and Retail illuminates the complex play of forces at work in racialized retail markets and the everyday impact of those forces on minority consumers. The essays demonstrate how past practice remains in force in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. 410 0$aRutgers Studies on Race and Ethnicity 606 $aBUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Consumer Behavior$2bisacsh 606 $aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Discrimination & Race Relations$2bisacsh 606 $aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / General$2bisacsh 606 $aConsumption (Economics)$xSocial aspects$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aShopping$xSocial aspects$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aMinorities$zUnited States$xEconomic conditions 606 $aStores, Retail$xSocial aspects$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aRetail trade$xSocial aspects$zUnited States$xHistory 607 $aUnited States$xCommerce$xSocial aspects$xHistory 607 $aUnited States$xRace relations$zEconomic aspects$xHistory 615 7$aBUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Consumer Behavior. 615 7$aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Discrimination & Race Relations. 615 7$aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / General. 615 0$aConsumption (Economics)$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aShopping$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aMinorities$xEconomic conditions. 615 0$aStores, Retail$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aRetail trade$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 676 $a381.1089 701 $aBay$b Mia$01694181 701 $aBayouth$b Neiset$01715005 701 $aCadava$b Geraldo L.$f1977-$01006614 701 $aCarter-David$b Siobhan$01715006 701 $aCooper$b Melissa L$01715007 701 $aEvett$b Sophia R$01715008 701 $aFabian$b Ann$01678843 701 $aGonzález$b Erualdo R$0905165 701 $aHakstian$b Anne-Marie G$01715009 701 $aHeaton$b John W$01715010 701 $aHenderson$b Geraldine Rosa$01715011 701 $aKenny$b Bridget$0865629 701 $aKwate$b Naa Oyo A$01266344 701 $aLondoño$b Johana$01270316 701 $aParker$b Traci$01592155 701 $aPorter$b Sharese N$01715012 701 $aSutton$b Stacey A$01715013 701 $aThompson$b Azure B$01715014 701 $aWilliams$b Jerome D$01195113 701 $aWu$b Ellen D$01048718 702 $aBay$b Mia$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt. 702 $aFabian$b Ann$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt. 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910809355903321 996 $aRace and Retail$94109261 997 $aUNINA
