Born and raised in the Yorkshire town of Normanton, she defied the odds to be elected Labour MP for Leeds North East in the 1945 General Election. Famed in her home town for her unlikely love of sports cars, she was a much-respected, no-nonsense, hard-working representative for her beloved Yorkshire home in Westminster. Mentored by Herbert Morrison and Hugh Gaitskell, she rose through the party becoming a Home Office minister under Roy Jenkins and latterly an Education Minister with responsibility for the introduction of comprehensive schools. In the Home Office in the 1960s she oversaw the introduction of substantial societal changes, including the abolition of the death penalty, the decriminalisation of homosexuality and the legalisation of abortion. Her political career spanned some of the most momentous decades in Britain's postwar history and she played an integral part in some of the most significant social, educational and political changes which the country has ever witnessed. Labour MP Rachel Reeves here tells Alice Bacon's story, narrating one woman's extraordinary progression from the coalfields to the Commons. 517 3 $aPolitical life of Alice Bacon 606 $aPoliticians$zGreat Britain$vBiography 606 $2Biography: historical, political & military 607 $aGreat Britain$xPolitics and government$y20th century 615 0$aPoliticians 676 $a324.2092 700 $aReeves$b Rachel$f1979-$01247785 702 $aCarr$b Richard$f1985- 801 0$bX 801 1$bCaBNVSL 801 2$bCaBNVSL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910153210103321 996 $aAlice in Westminster$92892388 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03621nam 2200613 450 001 9910809287603321 005 20230126215536.0 010 $a0-8032-9943-5 010 $a0-8032-9945-1 035 $a(CKB)3710000000830172 035 $a(EBL)4648499 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4648499 035 $a(OCoLC)956988877 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse53254 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4648499 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11249483 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL949096 035 $a(OCoLC)957435826 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000830172 100 $a20160902h20162016 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 10$aRebuilding shattered worlds $ecreating community by voicing the past /$fAndrea L. Drawing on six years of ethnographic research, the authors highlight the intersecting languages of blight, race, and place as elderly interlocutors attempt to make sense of the world they lost when urban renewal initiatives razed "Syrian Town"--a densely packed neighborhood of Lebanese American, Italian American, and African American residents. This ethnography of remembering shows how former residents engage collective memory-making through their shared place, language, and class position within the larger cityscape. Demonstrating the creative power of linguistic resources, material traces, and absent spaces, Rebuilding Shattered Worlds brings together insights from linguistic anthropology and material studies, foregrounding the role language plays in signaling "pastness.""--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aAnthropology of Contemporary North America 606 $aAnthropological linguistics$zPennsylvania$zEaston (Northampton County) 606 $aCollective memory$zPennsylvania$zEaston (Northampton County) 607 $aEaston (Northampton County, Pa.)$xSocial conditions 607 $aEaston (Northampton County, Pa.)$xEthnic relations 615 0$aAnthropological linguistics 615 0$aCollective memory 676 $a305.800974822 686 $aSOC002010$aHIS036080$2bisacsh 700 $aSmith$b Andrea L.$0507790 702 $aEisenstein$b Anna 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910809287603321 996 $aRebuilding shattered worlds$93969184 997 $aUNINA
