RELATION TO DISCONTINUOUS GAME LITERATURE"" 330 3 $aThis paper formally identifies an important role of banks: Banks competitively internalize production externalities and facilitate economic growth. I formulate a canonical growth model with externalities as a game among consumers, firms, and banks. Banks compete for deposits to seek monopoly profits, including externalities. Using loan contracts that specify price and quantity, banks control firms' investments. Each bank forms a firm group endogenously and internalizes externalities directly within a firm group and indirectly across firm groups. This unique equilibrium requires a condition that separates competition for sources and uses of funds. I present a realistic institution that satisfies this condition. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/264 606 $aEconomic development$xEconometric models 606 $aBanks and banking$xEconometric models 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aIndustries: Financial Services$2imf 606 $aNoncooperative Games$2imf 606 $aExchange and Production Economies$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 606 $aEconomic Development: Financial Markets$2imf 606 $aSaving and Capital Investment$2imf 606 $aCorporate Finance and Governance$2imf 606 $aOne, Two, and Multisector Growth Models$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aInterest Rates: Determination, Term Structure, and Effects$2imf 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aLoans$2imf 606 $aInterbank markets$2imf 606 $aDeposit rates$2imf 606 $aBank deposits$2imf 606 $aFinancial institutions$2imf 606 $aFinancial markets$2imf 606 $aFinancial services$2imf 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 606 $aInternational finance$2imf 606 $aInterest rates$2imf 607 $aUnited States$2imf 615 0$aEconomic development$xEconometric models. 615 0$aBanks and banking$xEconometric models. 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aIndustries: Financial Services 615 7$aNoncooperative Games 615 7$aExchange and Production Economies 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMortgages 615 7$aEconomic Development: Financial Markets 615 7$aSaving and Capital Investment 615 7$aCorporate Finance and Governance 615 7$aOne, Two, and Multisector Growth Models 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aInterest Rates: Determination, Term Structure, and Effects 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aLoans 615 7$aInterbank markets 615 7$aDeposit rates 615 7$aBank deposits 615 7$aFinancial institutions 615 7$aFinancial markets 615 7$aFinancial services 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aBanks and banking 615 7$aInternational finance 615 7$aInterest rates 700 $aUeda$b Kenichi$01610668 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910808878003321 996 $aBanks As Coordinators of Economic Growth$93986743 997 $aUNINA
