Fried's study investigates the impact of Achaemenid rule on the political power of local priesthoods during the 6th-4th centuries B.C.E. Scholars typically assume that, as long as tribute was sent to Susa, the capital of the Achaemenid Empire, subject peoples remained autonomous. Fried's work challenges this assumption. She examines the inscriptions, coins, temple archives, and literary texts from Babylon, Egypt, Asia Minor, and Judah and concludes that there was no local autonomy. The only people with power in the Empire were Persians and their appointees. This was true for Judah as well. The High Priest had no real power; there was no theocracy. 410 0$aBiblical and Judaic studies ;$vv. 10. 606 $aKo?nig$2swd 606 $aStaat (politicologie)$2gtt 606 $aTempels$2gtt 606 $aReligion$2gnd 606 $aStaatsform$2gnd 606 $aSatrapie$2gnd 606 $aPriester$2gnd 606 $aPolitik$2gnd 606 $aTemples$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01147397 606 $aReligion and politics$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01093842 606 $aPolitics and government$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01919741 606 $aReligion and politics$zMiddle East$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aTemples$zMiddle East$xHistory$yTo 1500 607 $aIran$xPolitics and government$yTo 640$2nli 607 $aIran$gAltertum$2gnd 607 $aMiddle East$2fast 607 $aIran$2fast 607 $aIran$xHistory$yTo 640 607 $aIran$xPolitics and government 608 $aHochschulschrift. 608 $aHistory. 615 07$aKo?nig. 615 17$aStaat (politicologie) 615 17$aTempels. 615 7$aReligion 615 7$aStaatsform 615 7$aSatrapie 615 7$aPriester 615 7$aPolitik 615 7$aTemples. 615 7$aReligion and politics. 615 7$aPolitics and government 615 7$aReligion and politics$xHistory 615 7$aTemples$xHistory 676 $a322/.1/0935 700 $aFried$b Lisbeth S$0710621 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910808863603321 996 $aThe Priest and the Great King$94078515 997 $aUNINA
