Despite its status as the largest of all ancient Persian military enterprises- including any aimed at Greece- this conflict has never been reconstructed in any detailed and comprehensive way. Thus, Trouble in the West adds tremendously to our understanding of Persian imperial affairs. At the same time, it dramatically revises our understanding of eastern Mediterranean and Aegean affairs by linking Persian deali 410 0$aOxford Studies in Early Empires 607 $aEgypt$xHistory$yTo 332 B.C 607 $aIran$xHistory$yTo 640 607 $aEgypt$xHistory, Military 676 $a935.05 676 $a935/.05 700 $aRuzicka$b Stephen$f1946-$01018717 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996205517203316 996 $aTrouble in the west$92397496 997 $aUNISA LEADER 03281nam 2200637 450 001 9910808835003321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a90-04-26022-6 024 7 $a10.1163/9789004260221 035 $a(CKB)2550000001134344 035 $a(EBL)1481154 035 $a(OCoLC)865330456 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001048215 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11703083 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001048215 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10997942 035 $a(PQKB)11463205 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1481154 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004260221 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1481154 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10783950 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL534052 035 $a(PPN)178905968 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000001134344 100 $a20131031d2013 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe nature and the image of princely power in Kievan Rus', 980-1054 $ea study of sources /$fby Walter K. Hanak offers a critical analysis of the annalistic, literary, and other works that provide rich if conflicting and contradictory information on the nature of princely power and their image or literary representations. The primary sources demonstrate an interaction between the reality and the notions concerning princely power and how this power generates an image of itself. The author also analyses the textual incongruities that appear to be a reflection of a number of currents -- Byzantine, Varangian, Khazar, and Eastern Slavic. The secondary sources provide a variety of interpretations, which Hanak seeks to uphold and dispute. His stress, however, is to view this evidence in the light of a newly Christianized state and the launching of a maturative process in its early history. 410 0$aEast Central and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages, 450-1450 ;$vv. 25. 606 $aPrinces$zKyivan Rus 607 $aKyivan Rus$xHistory$y862-1237$vSources 607 $aKyivan Rus$xKings and rulers 607 $aKyivan Rus$xHistory$y862-1237 615 0$aPrinces 676 $a947/.02 700 $aHanak$b Walter K.$f1929-$0190142 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910808835003321 996 $aThe nature and the image of princely power in Kievan Rus', 980-1054$94051405 997 $aUNINA
