Its survival for four centuries is a testament to its ingenuity, reflected in its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. The Canal District today is an extraordinary example of resilient historic design and cultural heritage in a living city, but it is not without present-day challenges: in recent years, its urban ecology has become subject to severe pressures of global tourism and supergentrification. This edited volume brings together 17 reputable scholars to debate questions about the origins, evolution, and future of the Canal District. With differing approaches and perspectives on the Canal District, the contributions render a collection where the whole is much more than the sum of the parts. The book breaks new ground in our understanding of the District's historic design, its evolution over four hundred years, and the fundamental issues in strategies and policies towards the future. While the main focus is clearly on Amsterdam, the discussions have an important bearing on urban historic preservation elsewhere, and on questions about enduring urban design."--$cProvided by publisher. 606 $aHistoric districts$zNetherlands$zAmsterdam 606 $aCity planning$zNetherlands$zAmsterdam 607 $aNetherlands$zAmsterdam$2fast 607 $aAmsterdam (Netherlands)$xBuildings, structures, etc 607 $aAmsterdam (Netherlands)$xHistory 607 $aGrachtengordel (Amsterdam, Netherlands) 610 $aAmsterdam. 610 $aCanal District. 610 $aDutch Republic. 610 $adesign. 610 $ahistory. 610 $aplanning. 610 $asustainability. 610 $atourism. 610 $aurban. 615 0$aHistoric districts 615 0$aCity planning 676 $a363.6909492352 700 $aNijman$b Jan$0276250 702 $aClé$b Lesger$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aFenne M$b Pinkster$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aFreek$b Schmidt$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aHerman van der$b Wusten$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aJaap Evert$b Abrahamse$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aJan$b Hein Furnée$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aJan$b Nijman$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aJoaquín$b Sabaté$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aKarin$b Pfeffer$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aLen de$b Klerk$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aMark$b Warren$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aMelisa$b Pesoa$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aNijman$b Jan$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aRobert C$b Kloosterman$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aRussell$b Shorto$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aSusan$b Legêne$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aTessa$b VerLoren van Themaat$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 702 $aWillem R$b Boterman$4ctb$4https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctb 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910808086803321 996 $aAmsterdam's Canal District$94013090 997 $aUNINA
