This book examines the nature and effect of contractual indemnities outside the insurance context. It is the first work to provide a detailed account of the subject in English law. The book presents a coherent theory of the promise of indemnity while also addressing important practical issues, such as the construction of contractual indemnities. The subject is approached from two perspectives. The foundations are laid by examining general principles applicable to indemnities in various forms. This covers the nature of indemnity promises; general principles of construction; the determination of scope; and the enforcement of indemnities. The approach then moves from the general to the specific, by examining separately particular forms of indemnity. Included among these are indemnities against liability to third parties, and indemnities against default or non-performance by third parties. The book states English law but it draws upon a considerable amount of material from other common law jurisdictions, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Singapore. It will appeal to readers from those countries."--Bloomsbury Publishing. 410 0$aHart studies in private law ;$vv. 12. 606 $aContracts$zGreat Britain 606 $aContracts 606 $aIndemnity against liability$zGreat Britain 606 $aIndemnity against liability 606 $2Contract law 606 $aContracts$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00876969 606 $aIndemnity against liability$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00968864 607 $aAustralia$2fast 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aContracts 615 0$aContracts. 615 0$aIndemnity against liability 615 0$aIndemnity against liability. 615 7$aContracts. 615 7$aIndemnity against liability. 676 $a346.4207 700 $aCourtney$b Wayne$01067714 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 801 2$bUkLoBP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910511642903321 996 $aContractual indemnities$92551795 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04258nam 2200733 450 001 9910808021403321 005 20230807215404.0 010 $a3-11-041867-3 010 $a3-11-041881-9 024 7 $a10.1515/9783110418675 035 $a(CKB)3710000000405841 035 $a(EBL)2035731 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001481961 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11927107 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001481961 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11508644 035 $a(PQKB)11146806 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC2035731 035 $a(DE-B1597)450572 035 $a(OCoLC)908512709 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783110418675 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL2035731 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11049698 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL807359 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000405841 100 $a20150120h20152015 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|nu---|u||u 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aFrom Passio perpetuae to Acta perpetuae $erecontextualizing a martyr story in the literature of the early church /$fPetr Kitzler 210 1$aBerlin ;$aBoston :$cDe Gruyter,$d[2015] 210 4$dİ2015 215 $a1 online resource (174 p.) 225 1 $aArbeiten zur Kirchengeschichte,$x1861-5996 ;$vvolume 127 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a3-11-041868-1 311 $a3-11-041942-4 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $tFront matter --$tContents --$tPreface --$tAcknowledgements --$t1. Since its composition in the early decades of the 3rd century, the Passio Perpetuae was enjoying an extraordinary authority and popularity. However, it contained a number of revolutionary and innovative features that were in conflict with existing social and theological conventions. This book analyses all relevant texts from the 3rd to 5th centuries in which Perpetua and her comrades are mentioned, and demonstrates the ways in which these texts strive to normalize the innovative aspects of the Passio Perpetuae. These efforts, visible as they are already on careful examination of the passages of the editor of the passio, continue from Tertullian to Augustine and his followers. The normalization of the narrative reaches its peak in the so-called Acta Perpetuae which represent a radical rewriting of the original and an attempt to replace it by a purified text, more compliant with the changed socio-theological hierarchies. 410 0$aArbeiten zur Kirchengeschichte ;$v127. 606 $aChristian women martyrs$zAfrica, North$xHistory 606 $aChristian saints$zAfrica, North$xBiography$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChristian martyrs$xHistory$yEarly church, ca. 30-600 606 $aChristian martyrs in literature 610 $aActa Perpetuae. 610 $aAugustine. 610 $aPassio Perpetuae et Felicitatis. 610 $amartyrdom. 615 0$aChristian women martyrs$xHistory. 615 0$aChristian saints$xBiography$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChristian martyrs$xHistory 615 0$aChristian martyrs in literature. 676 $a272/.1092 700 $aKitzler$b Petr$f1979-$01701714 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910808021403321 996 $aFrom Passio perpetuae to Acta perpetuae$94085670 997 $aUNINA
