Providing an overview of the past two decades of scholarship, it discusses the vexed relationship between verse and prose and the reliability as historical sources of the verse alone or the combination of verse and prose; the possibility and extent of non-native influence on the composition of these texts; and the function of the past, in particular given that most of the historiography of Norway was produced in Iceland. This book aims to stimulate studies of medieval Scandinavian historiography with its critical perspective on the texts and the scholarship, while also providing a useful work of reference in order to make this area of research accessible to scholars in cognate fields. 410 0$aNorthern world ;$vv. 54. 606 $aSagas$xHistory and criticism 606 $aOld Norse literature$xHistory and criticism 606 $aKings and rulers in literature 606 $aLiterature and history$zNorway 607 $aNorway$xHistoriography 607 $aNorway$xHistory$yTo 1030$vSources 607 $aNorway$xHistory$y1030-1397$vSources 607 $aNorway$xKings and rulers 615 0$aSagas$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aOld Norse literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aKings and rulers in literature. 615 0$aLiterature and history 676 $a948.1/01072 700 $aGhosh$b Shami$01651415 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910807441303321 996 $aKings' sagas and Norwegian history$94001351 997 $aUNINA
